January 25th, 2023. Today is Wednesday I completed my first mentor interview with Claire yesterday and Abril and I are going to interview Stan today.
Who is your mentor? Describe his or her life, education, career path and more
Though my Mentor is officially Stan, I think that Claire has connected with and helped Abril and I just as much as Stan has. Claire grew up in upstate New York and then went to U-Pit she went into biology but most people in similar courses were going into PA after college so then decided to switch to sustainability and transferred to Stony Brook University. Her first semester at SBU she studied abroad in Madagascar doing field work in the Rainforest. After college she came to San Diego and got a job restoring land. She got accepted to the SolarCorps program doing outreach at GRID and then landed a job with them! She really likes the job because she can help the local community from an environmental justice perspective, something that is built into GRIDs mission.
Read another student's blog: Karlo Vazquez Melendez.
What stands out to you? Well first of all his internship is a very unique one because he traveled to Sacramento and is working in the house (from what it looks like). What experiences do you have in common? We both work in an office and I bet some of the work we do is similar (send emails, working with calendar, etc.) What contrasts do you see? Karlo is meeting lots of people, going to events, has a phone at his desk. He also has to wear a suit whereas my org is very casual. He also has an ID card which I don't have and gets to look at confidential documents not yet released to the public! What questions do you have? I am still a little confused on what exactly he is doing for his final project. I know he is helping with the (proposed?) college in the South bay area but his role in that still confuses me a bit.
Some Pictures From Last Week ↓
Went to the Earth Lab @ Millennial Tech Middle School to talk with Groundworks, Ted an architect from UCSD (UCSD is working with Earth lab as one of its "community hubs"). We are planning to revamp an old wind turbine into a fully functional turbine/solar/batteries to provide for their energy needs. We are also looking at buying a few smaller iplants from primo energy in order to teach the students about renewable energy. After the meeting we got a tour! It's a huge space.
Thursday and Friday helped on the solar install! Woke up bright and early and headed to El Cajon! It was very cold last week so it was frigid in the morning but nice towards the afternoon. Abril and I weren't allowed on the roof so we helped with ground work: setting up/breaking down, bending pipe (to fit in the wires), moving panels, helping drill, screwing in components and helping connect wires. The team was really fun and diverse and it was cool to learn a bit about everyone's story. There's something very refreshing about working as a team and outside with your hands. On the last day everyone got Shawarma, suggested by Munir (he is from Afghanistan and said he would bring Shawarma but I guess it was a joke so we just got it from an Iranian restaurant instead).
